Hurricane Beryl: NOAA Issues Warning as Tropical Storm Makes Landfall in Mexico

As the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season continues to unfold, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a warning as Tropical Storm Beryl makes landfall in Mexico. The storm, which was previously classified as a hurricane, brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to areas along its path.

According to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Beryl made landfall early on Sunday evening, July 13, in the Mexican state of Veracruz. The storm has since weakened to a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour.

“According to our latest observations, Hurricane Beryl has made landfall in Mexico,” said Dr. Eric Blake, lead forecaster at the NHC. “While it’s no longer a hurricane, strong winds and heavy rainfall are still expected to impact the region, and we urge everyone in the affected areas to take necessary precautions.”

Tropical Storm Beryl formed off the coast of Honduras on Friday, becoming the second named storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. As it moved westward, the storm strengthened into a hurricane, with maximum sustained winds reaching 70 miles per hour.

However, as it made landfall in Mexico, Beryl encountered cooler waters and drier air, which prompted a weakening trend. Despite the weakening, the storm still poses a significant threat to life and property, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall and flooding.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions, including stockpiling food and water, evacuating to safe areas, and staying away from flooded waters. Emergency management officials in Mexico have activated emergency response teams to assist in rescue efforts and provide support to those affected by the storm.

NOAA’s National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for parts of Mexico, including Veracruz, Tabasco, and Chiapas states. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The impact of Tropical Storm Beryl highlights the importance of being prepared for hurricanes and other severe weather events. As the Atlantic hurricane season continues, residents in areas prone to hurricanes should remain vigilant and monitor weather updates closely.

Staying Safe During a Hurricane: Tips and Precautions

  • Stay informed: Monitor weather updates and sign up for emergency alerts from local authorities.
  • Evacuate: If ordered to evacuate, do so promptly and follow evacuation routes.
  • Stockpile supplies: Store food, water, and medications in case of an extended power outage.
  • Secure your home: Board up windows, trim trees, and secure outdoor furniture and decorations.
  • Charge your devices: Charge your phone, laptop, and other essential devices in case the power goes out.
  • Stay away from flooded waters: Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, as they can be contaminated and pose a risk of injury.
