HURRICANE BERYL MAKES LANDFALL IN GRENADA, BRINGING WIND AND RAIN

A powerful hurricane made landfall in the island nation of Grenada on Sunday, bringing heavy wind and rain to the Caribbean island.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Beryl made landfall around 8:00 PM local time (2:00 AM GMT) with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph). The storm was classified as a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Grenada, which is located in the southern Caribbean, is located at the northern end of the hurricane’s forecast track, and residents were advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the storm’s strong winds and heavy rain.

“We urge all citizens to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of their families,” said Prime Minister Keith Mitchell in a statement. “We have mobilized all necessary resources to ensure that everyone is safe and secure, and we will do everything possible to minimize the impact of the storm.”

The storm was expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the island, causing power outages and damaging buildings and infrastructure. Residents were advised to stay away from windows and exterior walls, and to unplug electrical appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges.

As the storm made landfall, reports began to emerge of power outages and property damage. The Grenada Broadcasting Network reported that hundreds of houses were affected by the storm, and that several businesses were also damaged.

Despite the significant impact of the storm, there were no reports of serious injuries or fatalities. Emergency responders and officials were working to assess the damage and provide aid to those affected.

Hurricane Beryl is expected to move northwestwards over the next 24 hours, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to other islands in the Caribbean, including St. Lucia and St. Vincent. Residents in these areas were advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the storm.

Grenada is no stranger to hurricanes, having been hit by several major storms in recent years. In 2017, Hurricane Irma caused widespread damage and destruction on the island, causing millions of dollars in damage and leaving thousands of people homeless.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, officials are working to assess the damage and provide aid to those affected. The government has also established evacuation centers for those who were forced to leave their homes due to the storm.

In a statement, the Red Cross said that it was working with government agencies and other organizations to provide aid to those affected by the storm. The organization is providing food, shelter, and medical assistance to those in need.

As the storm continues to move across the Caribbean, residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the storm’s strong winds and heavy rain.
